Who We Fund

The Howard Gilman Foundation supports a cross-section of New York City-based performing arts organizations of varying structure, style, and budget size. Above all, we are committed to serving geographically and culturally diverse organizations devoted to excellence in both artistic achievement and audience experience.

We Fund:

  • Professional performing arts organizations (dance companies, theatre companies, music ensembles)
  • Performing arts presenters
  • Service organizations that provide support for the performing arts and performing artists

We Don’t Fund:

  • Arts education, in-school, or after school arts programming
  • Professional performing arts training or tuition-based programs
  • Individual artists
  • Social service organizations
  • Museums, libraries, or other institutions whose primary mission is not the performing arts
  • Venues that are primarily rental facilities

Types of Grants

The Howard Gilman Foundation primarily provides general operating and project support grants. Please note that:

  • Awards generally range from $10,000 to $250,000 with a median grant of $60,000.
  • Multi-year general operating support is only provided to current grantees. Both New Applicants and Current Grantees interested in general operating support should apply for support for a period of one fiscal year. Multi-year grants will be made at staff’s discretion.
  • Project grants are for the duration of the proposed project, which may span more than one fiscal year. We do not fund projects retroactively.

We also provide additional support for cash reserves, building reserves, artistic reserves, capital needs, debt relief, and other special opportunities. These grants are provided on a case-by-case basis and are typically determined over the course of the application review process. Interested organizations should discuss this with their Program Officer or contact Grants Manager Kimberleigh Costanzo.
